Ann Hammond Smith of Garland, N.C. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the age of 61. She was born in Bladen County on November 3, 1961 daughter of the late George Asbury Hammond and Mae Belle Gause Hammond. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Marvin Hammond and George Elton Hammond, brothers-in-law Tommy Rogers and Woody Hall, sister-in-law, Sadie Hammond and her dear friend Penny Utterback.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Lacy Farril Smith Jr. of the home, daughters Jacqueline Creedmore (Marshall) and Ginny Smith (Matthew O’Neill), fur babies Mia and Baby Frank, two brothers Clyde Hammond (Annette) and David Hammond (Nancy) three sisters, Susie Rogers, Doris Horne (Wayne), and Sondra Guyton (Clifton), five sisters-in-law Margaret Hammond, Millie Hammond, Phyllis Smith, Jane Hall, and Teresa Kornegay (Floyd), numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends, Dr. Robert and Faye Rich.
Ann was a compassionate and giving lady who always gave 100 percent. Her husband and daughters were the apple of her eye. They often described her as the perfect wife and mother. She was the type of woman who loved with her whole heart and always put others before herself. So, it was fitting that Ann would choose a career in the medical field. She served as a nurse for 27 years and worked with Bladen Medical Associates of Elizabethtown. The staff were not only colleagues to her but family. She often vacationed with Dr. Rich and wife Faye and her friend, Penny Utterback.
When not working or traveling, Ann loved going to church and spending time with family, especially on “Sister Days”. They would gather to shop, dine, or just hang out. Even as children, they had a special bond. They would often make up their own games, such as Major Adams Wagon Train, where they rode the kitchen counters like horses or pretended to travel in their dad’s old red Chevy II. Ann was an exceptional seamstress. She enjoyed making her own doll clothes as a young girl. She made her bridesmaid’s dresses for her wedding and when her own children came along, she sewed all their Halloween costumes. Ann was an exceptional woman that loved Jesus, her family, her friends, and patients with a passion. She left an unforgettable impression with everyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing her.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Saturday, March 25th at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A 4:00 pm funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 26th at Singletary Baptist Church in Lumberton with the Dr. Adam Hammond and the Reverend Carlton Bryan officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Briar Branch Cemetery in Elizabethtown.
