Andrew Mckay

January 15, 1930 — July 26, 2018

Andrew Franklin McKay, Sr. was born on January 15, 1930, near Carver's Creek, NC. He died on July 26, 2018.

Andy was a graduate of Elizabethtown High School and served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the Mine Sweeper Partridge which hit a mine and was lost in the Sea of Japan. He survived to meet and marry his sweetheart, the late Dolores Major. They made their home in San Francisco for many years and during this time Andy first became a Boy Scout Troop Leader of Troop 76.

In 1968, Andy decided to come home to Elizabethtown. His company, AM Electric, wired many homes and businesses in Bladen County. If he was not wiring, he was fishing on the river. He was Troop Leader of Boy Scout Troop 600 and became the first Camp Ranger of Camp Bowers near White Oak. He was the recipient of our state's highest civilian honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and Boy Scouting's highest honor, The Silver Beaver Award. He was a Thirty-third degree Mason and a much-sought cook for local fish fries.

He is survived by his sister, Sally McKay Smith (Donald H.); his children, Nancy McKay Peterson (Ross) of Alameda, CA; Jean Batz of Redwood City, CA; and Andrew Franklin McKay, Jr. (Beth) of Apex, NC; his grandchildren, Tony Abdilla of Saratoga, CA; Crissy House of Issaquah, WA; and Leanna McKay Lane (Jesse) of Minot AFB, ND; and his great grandchildren, Ryan and Hailey Abdilla of Saratoga, CA.

The family will receive friends from 3-4 pm on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown followed by a funeral service at 4 pm with Pastor Dale Taylor officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Council.
