Anne Davis Smith of Elizabethtown, NC died at home on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Anne was born in Bladenboro, NC on November 7, 1942, the daughter of James Franklin Davis and Connie Price Davis. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Joline Davis Dixon of Burlington, NC. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bill C. Smith; son Ashley Smith and wife Sherry Shaw of Gastonia; daughter Kelly Humphrey and husband Jack Humphrey of Wilmington; sister Sue Council and husband W. Aubrey Council of Richmond, Virginia; brother James Davis and wife Ann M. Davis of Fayetteville; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat Whiskers.
Anne graduated from Bladenboro High School, attended St. Andrew's College in Laurinburg, and graduated from Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington). She earned a Master's in Education from East Carolina University. Anne was a high school teacher for 31 years. She began her teaching career at Elizabethtown High School during its last year of operation, and she then moved to the original East Bladen High School where she taught for 30 years. Anne was an avid basketball fan and loved what ACC basketball used to be. She was a Master Gardener, a member of the Bladen Belles Chapter of the Red Hat Society, a member of SEANC - District 24, and a longtime member of the United Methodist Women of Wesley's Chapel, whose annual church Christmas Bazaar was an event dear to her heart.
Visitation will be held at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home on Saturday, March 29 from 6-8 pm, and the funeral will be held at Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Pinecrest Cemetery in Bladenboro, NC.
The family would like to express our love and appreciation to Mrs. Wilma Storms, Anne's longtime caregiver and dear friend. Above all, the children wish to express our deepest love and admiration for our father, Bill, who devotedly cared for our mother in her final years. Anne dearly loved flowers and plants, and tributes are graciously accepted; or, you may make a contribution in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association-Eastern North Carolina Chapter, or Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown.
