Betty Jean Trott Kornegay

Betty Jean Trott Kornegay, 90, of Elizabethtown, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Betty was born on May 23, 1934 in Richlands, North Carolina (Onslow County). She was preceded in death by her parents Marvin A. Trott, Sr. and her mother Jean Collins Trott and one brother Marvin A. Trott, Jr.

Betty is survived by her husband Kenneth of the home, two sons, Greg Kornegay (Marlene) of Leland and Jeff Kornegay (Susan) of Elizabethtown, five grandchildren: Dustin Kornegay (Beth) of Garner, Lauren Kornegay Atwell (Rob) of Clayton, Alaina Kornegay Driggs (Alex) of Leland, Noah Kornegay of Leland, and Savannah Scoggins Perrotta (Anthony) of Leland. Her great grandchildren are Luka and Eden Atwell, Bennett and Emma Kornegay. Betty is also survived by two nieces Debra Trott Clark and Lori Trott Aragona both of Jacksonville.

Betty attended Barton College (formerly Atlantic Christian College) and graduated in 1956 with a degree in education. Following graduation from college, Betty began teaching in Zebulon, North Carolina. Betty and Kenneth married in 1957 and moved to Elizabethtown in 1960 where they lived and raised their family for more than 65 years. She was a conscientious employee who worked for Elizabethtown Primary School for 25 years as a kindergarten and first grade teacher. She always read a bible story and had a time of prayer with her students as a part of their daily activities.

Betty was a lady of impeccable Christian character. Raised in a Christian home, faith was an important part of her life. As a youth, attending Christian camp with her cousins was the highlight of her summers and served as a reinforcement of her faith. As she raised her own family, the joys and challenges of life were always put in the context of scripture; sharing scripture and devotions with her children and grandchildren. Betty was a member of Elizabethtown Baptist Church where she was an active member of the ladies Sunday School class.

From her earliest years Betty enjoyed poetry, reading, and writing; she especially enjoyed reading Christian books. She was known for sending cards of encouragement to church members and family. Through the years she enjoyed spending time with her uncles, Jackie and Daryl, reminiscing about their childhood events of "Long Time Ago". Betty was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for her family. She received much joy in just being with family.

The family will receive friends from 2:00pm - 3:00pm on Friday, December 20, 2024 in the fellowship hall of Elizabethtown Baptist Church. A celebration of life will occur following visitation at 3:00pm in the church's sanctuary. Burial will follow at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
