Carl Mcculloch

Carl Stewart McCulloch, 92, of Elizabethtown died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, January 13, 2017. Carl was born in Bladen County on March 4, 1924, the son of David Calvin McCulloch and Mary Elizabeth Dunham McCulloch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Priest McCulloch, his brothers David Alexander McCulloch and James Thomas McCulloch.
He is survived by his sister Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Langley of Winston Salem, NC; his sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Priest of Council, Hilda Priest Sullivan of Frederick, Maryland, and Margaret McCulloch of Dallas, NC. Other loved ones left to cherish his life are his nephews: Calvin B. Langley of Tennessee, Dave McCulloch Jr, Russell Priest (Doll), Charlie Priest (Tracie), Kenneth Coleman (Catherine), John Wilton Priest (Anita), Joe Priest, David Priest (Karen), Stephen Poirier, and nieces: Barbara Williams, Cathy Cases and Cheryl Poirier, and many loving first cousins, great nieces and nephews.

Carl McCulloch graduated from Elizabethtown High School and later earned an Associate's degree in Accounting. He served as Register of Deeds in Bladen County for 32 years. He also served as president of North Carolina Association of Register of Deeds. After that he served as District V Chairman and member of the Executive and Legislative Committee. He was a member of the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club for 60 years. He served for 24 years as the Bladen County Chairman of the North Carolina Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Handicapped Adults. He was chosen as State Easter Seal volunteer in 1974 and served 6 years on the Governor's Advocacy Council for handicapped citizens of North Carolina. He was chairman of the Bladen Lakes Scout District and a member of the Cape Fear Council Executive Board. He was presented the Silver Beaver Award in 1979 for outstanding services to scouting in Southeastern North Carolina. While serving as chairman of the Elizabethtown Parks Development Commission, he helped design the Tory Hole Park of which he was very proud. He also served on the Bladen County Nursing Home Board. Much of his spare time was spent volunteering in the community that he loved. He was a member of the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the Pittman Bible Class and was active in other spiritual functions of the church.

A special thanks to the staff at the Elizabethtown Nursing Home and to his devoted caregivers for their loving care during the past two and a half years.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 4:30pm at the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church with Dr. Chris Denny and Rev. David Holloway officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service from 3-4:15pm in the fellowship hall. Burial will follow the service at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
