Carlie “Banjo” Weldon Strickland, age 81, of Bladenboro passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023. He was born in Bladen County on February 6, 1942, to the late Carlie Strickland and Nina Evelyn Muse Strickland.
Banjo, as he was affectionately known as, was a longtime resident and businessman of Bladenboro. He owned and operated Banjo’s Wrecker Service for many years until his health declined. Anyone who ran into Banjo knew he loved to talk. They looked forward to his jokes and his tales of car towing. He was such a hoot to be around. Banjo loved his family and loved to eat. On any given day, he enjoyed his honey buns, a cold Pepsi cola or a bag of Lays potato chips. He also loved to sit down to an oyster feast when in season.
That big red wrecker truck and that grand sense of humor will be missed by the community and those that knew and loved him best.
Banjo was preceded in death by his parents, his adoring wife Cindy Strickland, and his daughter, Lisa Strickland. Left to cherish his memory are sons, Dennis Strickland, and T. J. Strickland, both of Bladenboro, brother David Lee Strickland of Bladenboro, grandson Dennis Hugh Strickland, three great grandchildren Kenneth Dakota Hugh Strickland, Brinkleigh Jaide Strickland, and Addalyn Blaire Thompson, and his ex-wife JudyDiane Strickland.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Singletary Cemetery of Butters. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
