David Herring

May 6, 1946 — August 11, 2017

David Lee "Bill" Herring, 71, of Tar Heel, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 11, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. David was preceded in death by his parents: Lacy and Dorothy Herring and his only child: Rodney Key. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Diane Herring of the home; one sister: Mickey Sherman (Bob) of Fayetteville; one brother: Bob O'Brien (Ginny) of Dunn; three grandchildren: Ryan Williams (Stevie) of St. Petersburg, FL, Heather Alvarez of Hope Mills, Amber West of Crossville, TN and eight great-grandchildren.

Bill was proud to have served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Special Services. His passion was selling goods at the Raleigh Flea Market with his wife by his side. His favorite morning activity was having breakfast at Melton's in Elizabethtown. Whether at the Flea Market or Melton's, those he encountered became an important part of his extended family. He loved each of them dearly. Bill was a very loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. He will be missed.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 7:00-9:00pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 7:00pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home Chapel with Andrew Clark officiating service.

In lieu of flowers, Bill's wish was to continue to see that his wife was taken care of therefore, he asked any memorials be made to his wife, Diane Herring.
