Dorothy Daniel Barnes

Dorothy Daniel Barnes, age 83, of Elizabethtown went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2023, while at Westfield Rehabilitation and Health Center in Sanford, NC. She was born and raised in Bladen County. She and her late husband Hector V. “Andy” Daniel settled in the town of Elizabethtown where she served as a dental assistant for 30 years and helped her husband Andy run the A & J Mart of Elizabethtown until his death. She was a member of Wesley’s Chapel where she was an active member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Circle Meetings.

Dorothy was a breath of fresh air. Her smile and friendly disposition allowed her to make a host of friends wherever she was present. She loved to decorate, bake, and host family at her home. As her health declined, she went to live at the Westfield Rehabilitation and Health Center where she enjoyed visiting other residents. She also enjoyed the activities and fellowship with her friends. Whenever she returned to the center from a home visit with her family, her face would light up knowing she could resume her daily chats and visits with friends she had made there. Dorothy was a compassionate, nurturing sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her time here on earth was well spent spreading love and kindness to her family, her friends and even strangers.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Dexter Deaver and Polly Ann White Deaver, her husband Andy, her second husband Harvey Barnes, siblings Ethel Deaver, Ernest Deaver, Ervin Deaver, Graham Deaver, Norris Deaver, Bettie Alford, and Leta Bell Cain. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Angela Daniel Lewis (Billy) of Winterville, Julie Daniel Flynn (Bryant) of Sanford, granddaughters Madison Flynn and Megyn Flynn, sister Gracie Taylor of Elizabethtown, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, October 22^nd at Wesley’s Chapel in Elizabethtown. The Pastor Reverend Jonathan Hayes, the Reverend Donald Daniel and the Reverend David Wade will officiate the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
