Ernest Richard Hester of Bladenboro passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ettaree Taylor Hester; one brother, Kendrick Hester; one sister, Hilda Hester Coleman (Vollie); one sister-in-law, Vonda Hester; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Fred Gordon and Mary Edith Hester, brothers Ewen Hester and Broadus Hester, and one infant sister, Clarice.
Born in Bladenboro, Ernest graduated from Bladenboro High School, completed two years of business school, and served in the US Army during the Korean War. His career focused largely on building and carpentry work, and he was happiest when he was tinkering with his tractors and working in his vegetable garden. Or maybe he was happiest when he was listening to or making music. Ernest was talented to be able to play multiple instruments by ear, including piano, violin, guitar, mandolin, autoharp, and accordion. He also loved singing tenor with quartets and family singing groups as they shared their favorite hymns and gospel songs.
Ernest was a skilled storyteller who enjoyed making people laugh with favorite renditions of old family favorites. His knowledge of genealogy was unsurpassed as he worked to find connections between his family and most families with which he came in contact. He was a quiet man whose laughter, wit and charm will be missed.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 - 4:00 pm on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Community Life Center, followed by a graveside service at 4:00 pm in the Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Bladenboro. Rev. Warren Hill and Rev. Chris Hefner will be officiating the services.
