Eubie Melvin

Eubie \\"Carson\\" Melvin, age 80, of Clarkton died Sunday, May 16, 2010.



Mr. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Colon and Tiney Register Melvin.

Mr. Melvin delivered The Charlotte Observer as the paper boy, worked at Mr. Hortons\\' Cafe in Big-L- Warehouse, worked for Beef Fletcher at the Gulf Station, worked at Lee\\'s Place in Clarkton, NC (H. B. ) started working in 1942 at the age of twelve after school because of World War Two. (WW-2 Started Dec. 7, 1941) Operated Cafe Lee\\'s place as manager and, he also had a milk route. At the age of sixteen he started flying lessons. He used part of the N.A. Curries farm for an air strip, his landing field was near NC 211 West of Clarkton. He had his own plane. He served as Chief of Police in Clarkton; operated the New Gulf Station on US 701 by-pass from (1958-1960); operated New American Station on US 701 by-pass from (1961-1966) and operated a restaurant at Lake Waccamaw. He drove a tanker for Coastal Transport, worked for Clarkton Steel Co. driving a transfer truck, worked for National Spinning driving a truck (18 wheeler, Bobby Hester of Bladenboro). He was a member of Clarkton Volunteer Fire Department, Assistant Chief. He raised money to build a new fire house after the first one burned. Organized the Clarkton Rescue Squad and helped build the rescue building. Served as First Chief for three years.





The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home.



Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Clarkton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steuart Link officiating burial will follow in Clarkton Cemetery.



Mr. Melvin is survived by his wife, Sarah G. Melvin of the home; two sons, Mike Melvin and wife Marilyn of Clarkton; John Melvin and wife Susan of Clarkton; a daughter, Becky M. Brown of Clarkton; a brother, Frank Melvin of Clarkton; two sisters, Janice Edwards of Riegelwood and Jo Blackburn of Clarkton; five grandchildren, Diana Melvin, Jennifer Melvin, Ashley Melvin, Greg Brown and Zachary Melvin.
