Eugenia Cross

Eugenia A. Cross, age 95, of Elizabethtown passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. She is predeceased in death by her husband, Samuel Preston Cross; parents, Rufus Tilden Allen and Ella Clark Allen; brothers, Clark and twin brother Radford Allen; sisters, Grace A. Straughan, Doris A. Hayes, and Calista A. Maxwell. She is survived by a son, Dr. Samuel Ray Cross and wife Denise; a daughter, Jane Tilden J. Applewhite; five grandsons, William, Wes and Allen Johnson, and Josh and Jay Raynor; four great-grandchildren, Kate, William and Davis Johnson, and Jamison Raynor; and several nieces and nephews.

Eugenia graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1937 and from East Carolina University. She taught in the public schools in Kinston, Whiteville, and Elizabethtown for forty-four years. She served on The Bladen County Board of Education for sixteen years. She was an active member of American Business Women, a member of The Daughters of American Revolution, and was a member and President of The Lillie Hester Extension Club for about twenty years. Eugenia was President of District 10, Junior women's Club. She was a member of The Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church where she was an elder, co-moderator, circle chair, Woman of Year, and an active church member.

She is an outstanding leader in the community and was awarded The Wanda Campbell Award, The Jaycees Awards; Vocational Teacher of the Year, and recognized by Govenor Martin. She was honored with The Order of The Long Lear Pine by Govenor Mike Easley in 2005.

The family receive friends on Thursday, December 31, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church PAC Building. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Chris Denny officiating. At all other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Jane Tilden J. Applewhite, 93 Turtle Cove Drive, White Lake, NC 28337.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church (800 W Broad St, Elizabethtown, NC 28337), Lower Cape Fear Hospice (206 Warrior Trail, Whiteville NC 28472) or Mount Horeb Cemetery Fund (407 Monroe Road, Council, NC 28434).
