Fletcher Kemp, 101, of Elizabethtown, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor Gooden Kemp, his parents Johnny L. Kemp and Charity A. Clark as well as five older siblings.
He attended school in Lisbon and Clarkton High School. In 1943, Fletcher was drafted into the United States Army Air Force where he served 2.5 years during World War II. In later years, he met his future wife Eleanor and the two married in 1958. After their marriage, Fletcher worked with the Bladen County Sheriffs Department and served as the head jailor until his retirement in 1984. In his retirement, Fletcher also enjoyed working for local car dealers picking up special ordered vehicles.
Left to cherish his memory are several nieces and a nephew as well as many great nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his care givers whom Fletcher loved, Georgia George, Rose Blanks and Sarah Smith.
A graveside service will be held at McMillan Cemetery located on S. Lower Street on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 2:00pm with Pastor Dayton Wilson of the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Kemp located at 739 Airport Road, Elizabethtown, NC 28337 following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the McMillan Cemetery Fund c/o Tomye Glenn, 2508 Deer Walk Lane, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.
