Floyd Curtis Hursey died peacefully at New Hanover Regional Medical Center June 25, 2007 at age 80, from complications of aortic replacement surgery. Born to T. D. Hursey and Ruby K. Hursey, he was one of three children. Floyd was a loving husband and father. He was a cornerstone of the Singletary United Methodist Church. He helped build the present day church. He served on the board of trustees and as finance committee chairman for many years.
Floyd was instrumental in starting the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department in 1955 and served as Chief from 1955 to 1992. He continued to serve as an active member through 2006, his dedication to service totaling over 51 years. Floyd was the first president of the Bladen County Firefighters Association and was a force of change helping to modernize the fire service
in Bladen County.
Floyd Hursey enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines in the later days of World War II. He served through several tours including a short time in post war Germany. He was proud of his service and received an honorable discharge in 2003 when the Merchant Marines were finally recognized by congress for their part in the war.
Floyd retired from the Bladen County School System after 44 years. He served as Maintenance Supervisor for Bladen County Schools as did his father before him. He made an impact on those he met and those he taught during his years with the school system. For over 50 years Floyd and his father helped build and maintain the school systems in Bladen County.
Floyd was captain and co-manager of the Dublin Dodgers men\\'s baseball team in the late 1940\\'s and 1950\\'s whose members remain close friends to this day. They still remain a team, rooting each other on as they make it home one last time.
As a hobby Floyd was a licensed plumber, master carpenter, and electrician (when need be), to most it seemed he could do it all. He loved to help people especially the down and out. He was always there for those in need. He was inventor, designer, and builder all in one and could solve most any problem. He was loved by all for everything he did.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother T. D. Hursey and Ruby K. Hursey, wife Barbara M. Hursey, daughter Angela Hursey. Floyd is survived by his three children daughter Ellen Hursey Jackson of St Pauls, and sons, Curt Hursey of Wilmington, Alex Hursey and his wife Lori F. Hursey of Dublin. Extended son Marc Long of Raleigh. He is also survived by eight grandchildren. Jimmy Jackson and his wife Faith of Lumberton, Joey Jackson and wife Kimberly of Fayetteville, Bonnie Canady and husband Andy of St Pauls, Dr. Jonathan Jackson of Wilmington, Zachery Hursey of Dublin, Nicholas Hursey of Dublin, Ian Hursey of Dublin and Julianne Hursey of Dublin and seven great grandchildren, Laney McPhaul of Raleigh, Trey Jackson of Lumberton, Taylor Jackson of Lumberton, Jordan Jackson of Fayetteville, Mackenzie Jackson of Fayetteville, Emerson Jackson of Fayetteville and Brooke Canady of St. Pauls, a sister Mavis H. Singletary of Tar Heel, a brother David Hursey II of Dublin.
The visitation will be held from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m., Thursday, June 28, at Bladen Funeral Home, Elizabethtown, NC. The funeral will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Singletary United Methodist Church, Dublin. The burial will be in Singletary United Methodist Church Cemetery.
