Floyd Sessoms

d. March 8, 2014

Rev. Floyd Gregory Sessoms, 90, of Elizabethtown passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 in Wilson, NC. He was born on May 18 , 1923 to the late John Wesley and Edna Brisson Sessoms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowena Sessoms. Mr. Sessoms was a veteran of the US Army.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 11, at Dublin Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church at 1:00 pm with funeral services following at 2:00pm with Rev. Joe Foster, Rev. Preston Heath; and Matthew Knight. Burial will follow in Bladen Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Sessoms is survived by his sons; Clayton Sessoms and wife Denise of Wilson; Wesley Ray Sessoms and wife Stephanie of Raleigh and his daughter, Joyce S. Knight and husband Randy of East Over; a brother, Curtis Sessoms of Elizabethtown; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Mr. Floyd Sessoms - farmer, logger, forest ranger, minister - was far more than his occupational titles would suggest. He was also an extraordinary son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, pastor, and friend. The words character, integrity, and honorable seem inadequate when attempting to describe him. From a child in the family fields during the Great Depression, to the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in World War II, to the stands of pine trees of Bladen Lakes State Forest, and to more than four decades as a minister to congregations in Gastonia, Delco, Willard, Wilmington, and Salemburg, he was a man of peace and reconciliation. He was dedicated to his wife Rowena, adored and respected by his children, loved by his grandchildren who called him Pa, and by his great-grandchildren who called him Big Pa. At the end of his life, resting comfortably family at his side, he had run the good race and fought the good fight and his reunion with his wife of well over 60 years is celebrated. He, Floyd Gregory Sessoms, is an example to us all and we look forward to the time when we shall all rejoice when we shall again see him and be together for all eternity. Good night, sweet prince. Flowers are appreciated but donations may be made to Dublin PFWB, PO Box 186, Dublin, NC 28332.
