Grace Burney

Grace Batten Burney, 87, of Whiteville went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Columbus Regional Healthcare Center. She was preceded by her parents, John Arthur Batten Sr. and Nancy Peacock Batten, her husband Gethro Burney, one brother, John Arthur Batten Jr., daughter Grace Camille Burney and grandson John Burr. Left to cherish her memory are sons, Ronald Earl Burney (Loretta) of Elgin, SC, Matthew Burney Sr. of Whiteville, one sister Beatrice Burney of Whiteville, six grandchildren, Matthew Burney Jr., Marshall Griffin, Mallory Griffin (Kathy), Nancy Griffin, Jeremy Griffin and Tiffany Clutter (Aaron), ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Grace was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished her family dearly. She enjoyed being a housewife and spending time surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Grace never left home without her red lipstick and a hat. She was a true Southern Belle at heart that loved life. She loved tending to her flower gardens and attending bus tours traveling to see the sights. Grace will be missed for her tender heart and compassion for others.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown followed by a funeral service at 2 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Cory Walker officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Clarkton.
