Jack Ward McCarley, 76 of Newport News,Virginia formerly of Bladenboro, passed away Friday,July 3, 2009.



He is survived by his son, Dr. J. Britt McCarley, daughter-in-law, Christy, grandchildren, Matthew and Maura, of Yorktown, VA; daughter, Candice H. Williams, son-in-law, Wade, and grandchildren, Shannon Smith, Ivey Johnson, and Donna Allen, of Bladenboro, and five great grandchildren.



Jack was preceded in death by he wife, Jeanette H. McCarley; parents, Frances W. McCarley and Jack D. McCarley; and brother, William \\"Billy\\" McCarley.



Jack was born in Tallassee, AL, in 1933, and in 1942 his family moved to Atlanta, GA, where he lived for 60 years before moving briefly to NC and then to VA to be near his son during he last years, Jack attended Brown High School in Atlanta, GA, and served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 in both the Medical Corps and the Transportation Corps. He worked for CSX Transportation and its predecessor railroads for over 40 years and always said that he enjoyed working every day that he climbed aboard a train. Jack was a private pilot for several decades and delighted in flying family and friends over the countryside from Alabama to the Carolinas. In his later years, he took up boating and especially enjoyed cruising Georgia\\'s Allatoona Lake and camping on its shores.



The family will receive friends Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home.



Funeral services will be held Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11:00 am at North Side Baptist Church of Bladenboro with Rev. Scott Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Lumberton.
