James \\"Jimmie\\" Gillespie Flowers Sr., loving husband, father and friend went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 16, 2009. Born on June 22, 1921 and raised in Bladen County, Jimmie was the son of the late James Edgar and Lillie Williamson Flowers. He was preceded in death by his wife Liza, of 64 years, and one baby brother, Elkanah.
He graduated from Elizabethtown High School and later started a logging and timber business with his father. He later went on to become a Civil Service engineer and served as a Lockmaster on the Cape Fear River.
Jimmie leaves behind to remember five children, Susan Pope and husband Fred of Rockwell, Texas, James G. Flowers, Jr. and wife Sue of Warsaw, NC, Jennifer Chaiken and husband Dick of Hendersonville, NC, Jeffery Flowers and wife Brenda of Wilmington, NC, and Michael Flowers of Wilmington, NC; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Scott, Susan, Eric, Trisha, Katherine, Jamie, and Allison; five great grandchildren, Jana, Alex, Ashton, Shane, Braedon; two sisters, Dorothy Elliott of Florence, SC and Freddie Brockington and husband Keels of Lake City, SC; and two brothers, Edgar Flowers and wife Mary Louise of Baxley, GA and Avid Flowers and wife Cleo of Wilmington, NC; first cousin, Alice Long of Wilmington, NC; a special sister-in-law, Dathlene Roofe of Hamlet, NC; many nieces and nephews and very special friends Dean, Pam, Kayla and Kristen Bordeaux, Jason T. Murray; special caregivers and friend, Shelby Patrick, Kim Pridgeon, Sharon Buffkin, and Amy Knight; and a treasure trove of wonderful friends.
Jimmie was a lifelong and the oldest member of Carvers Creek United Methodist Church and was a major inspiration to many members and friends there. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Arab Shrine Club, also a member of the United Methodist Men's Club and a Charter member of the Edgar Flowers Oyster Club.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday January 19, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, NC, with a celebration of life to be held on Thursday January 22, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Carver\\'s Creek United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Remembrances are welcomed or donations may be made in his memory to Carver\\'s Creek United Methodist Church. Remember me with smiles and gladness for that\\'s the way I\\'ll remember you all.
