James Lanier

September 12, 1935 — June 1, 2022

Clarkton

James Corrie (‘Jake’) Lanier passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday June 1, 2022.  He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Raleigh Edwards and Essie Duncan Lanier, his sister Shirley Wright, and his grandson Ethan Cain.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hilda Storms Lanier, one sister, and his five daughters and their partners: Sonia Floyd, Alicia Lanier, Renee Lanier (Bradley Thomason), Diana Bastasch (Mark Bastasch), and Susan Walker (Bobby Walker).  Jake leaves behind seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jake was an adventurer, a farmer, mechanic, corrections officer, and so much else.  A true provider and family man, he worked two jobs most of his life.  As an adventurer, he enlisted in the army just after high school and spent three years training in Kentucky and serving in the 3rd Armored Division in Germany.  Driving a tank was a highlight of this young farmer’s life!  After retirement with honors from White Lake Prison Camp, this adventurer drove across the US 19 times to see the sights and visit his family and friends on the west coast.  He shared his love of travel with anyone who had the energy to make the trip.

Pops, as the family called him, lived out his final months doing what he loved.  After an emergency room visit amidst the pandemic last October, through sheer determination he was able to get back on his feet and this spring planted (with much assistance!) his garden to provide for the family.  His final acts of love and generosity were to share the bounty with as many people as he could, and get everything in order and taken care of, even in the heat of the first day of June. We already miss him greatly.

A private memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
