James Thaddeus Stevens, 78, of 3524 Borland Road, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 1, 1928 in Council, North Carolina to the late James Thaddeus Stevens and Elizabeth Florence Maultsby.



James joined the Navy at an early age and served actively for twenty three years, receiving the bronze star. After his retirement as a Chief Petty Officer, he moved on to his second career in the hotel, retail, and restaurant businesses in Virginia Beach, Virginia with his brother, Charles. Leaving the hustle and bustle after several successful years, he moved to a life of farming in Efland, North Carolina. Copper Hill Farms was where he spent his last thirty years raising cattle, boarding horses, and growing a garden. He was known for his many talents from constructing a thirty stall barn single handedly to plowing all his fields. He will be remembered for his great smile and always having a twinkle in his eyes.



He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Catherine Schulte Stevens; four daughters, Elizabeth S. Lake White of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jennifer S. Johnson and her husband Junius of Atlanta, Georgia, Rebecca S. Moore of Carrboro, North Carolina and Jamie Catherine Stevens of Seattle, Washington. Two grandchildren, Daniel Christopher Lake and James Finley Johnson. Two step children Thomas G. Stevens of Norfolk, Virginia and Lily S. Walker of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Four sisters, Mary Alice Orci of Palm Beach, Florida, Peggy and Charles Moore of Little Washington, North Carolina, Catherine S. Carlson of Sun City, California, Betsy Singletary Telley and her husband Ray of Granite Falls, North Carolina and his brother Charles Henry Stevens of Pinehurst, North Carolina and sister-in-law Rachel M. Stevens of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. And a host of several special nephews, nieces, and friends.



On behalf of James, the family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Hladik and all the staff at University of Chapel Hill who were involved in his final care.



A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tear Drop Inn in Hillsborough, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held at Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church in Council, North Carolina on Friday, January 19th at 1pm.
