Jean Gooden

Jean Lewis Gooden, age 81, of Elizabethtown passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents: Berry Lewis and Myrtice Warwick Lewis, her husband: Bennett Gooden, a daughter: Scarlett Adams, and her husband: Warren Adams, brothers: Coegill Lewis and Rusty Lewis and sister: Thay White. Jean leaves behind her husband: Purdie Edge of the home; step-son: Tony Dean Edge of Daytona Beach, FL; daughter: Kathryn "Tobie" Best (Jay) of Raleigh; four sisters: Hannah Rose Gooden, Edith Stewart, Glenys Thompson, all of Elizabethtown and Martha Bridgers of Wallace; brother: Autry Lewis of Raleigh, brother- nephew: Tommy White of Elizabethtown, sister-in-law: Eleanor Kemp (Fletcher) of Elizabethtown; three grandsons: Marc Best (Emily), Lewis Best, and Samuel Best (Savannah), one granddaughter: Emily McArn Best, two great grandchildren: James and Ruth Best; many nieces and nephews; and two wonderful caregivers: Arletha McKoy and Mae Leach.

Jean adored her family and her predeceased canine companion Fluffy. She enjoyed tending her flower garden. She was an excellent seamstress. Jean loved her church, Elizabethtown Presbyterian, where she served as an elder and sang in the Adult Choir. She cherished her time working with children. For many years, Jean helped teach the Sunday school class for Pre-School through second grade. She also helped with the church's "Wednesday's Together" Children's program. She served as College Scholarship Chairman for the Presbyterian Women. Jean retired from Danaher. Then she worked for many years at Fisher's Men's Store and Ladies Shop in Elizabethtown as a sales clerk and did their alterations.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Bladen- Gaskins Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 5th at the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Holloway officiating. Burial will follow the services in the McMillan Cemetery in Elizabethtown.
