Jerold "Jerry" Porter Register, age 77 of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice House in Whiteville. He was born on September 5, 1935, to the late Enoch Clayton and Ann Milligan Register. He was a Navy veteran and a current member of VFW Post 8062. He served his community for many years as Assistant Chief of the Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department and also as a past President of the Elizabethtown Jaycees. He was the second generation owner of the fondly remembered Register's Ben Franklin 5-10 from 1958 to1975. He was an avid scuba diver, pilot and founding member of the Elizabethtown Flying Club. He is predeceased by his parents and brother E.C. Register, Jr. and his beloved poodle Ginger.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Catherine H. Register; three sons, Jerold "Jay" Register and wife Linda of Virginia Beach, VA, Dr. Christopher Heath Register and wife Amy of Smithfield, VA and Erik Craig Register and fiancée Allyson Harnaha of Pittsburgh, PA.; one daughter, Lisa Register McKellar of Jacksonville, NC; grandchildren Mary Matthews, Joshua Matthews, Katie Matthews, Andrew Matthews, Jerold Nadson Register, Hannah McKellar, Sydney and Clayton Register and five great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Elizabethtown City Cemetery. The Reverend Neil Smith will officiate the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Bladen County Animal Shelter, 506 Smiths Circle, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.
