John “Jack” Watson Cross, Jr., 88, U.S. Coast Guard Veteran of Elizabethtown passed away on Friday, September 20, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine Cross. Jack leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Yvonne Butler Cross, of the home; three sons: John W. Cross III (JoAn) of The Colony, TX; Powell J. Cross (Toni) of the home; Ben A. Cross (Mandy) of Columbus, GA; one sister, Kay Dowless (Gerald) of Florida; six grandchildren: Caitlin Melvin (Dustin), Wesley Cross (Emily), Laney Cross, Kayla Cross, Abbie Cross, Katy Cross and one great granddaughter, Emma Catherine Melvin.
Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, working with the fire department and beach trips with his grandchildren. He was known for making his rounds at the local restaurants, ordering an egg biscuit with mustard from Meltons and sitting around with his friends telling stories of days gone by. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and served on the U.S. Absecon until 1956. Among his many accomplishments, he was the owner and operator of Jack Cross Heating & Air for 50 years, Fire Chief of the Elizabethtown Fire Department, and Elder of the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Saturday, September 21st at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service is planned for Sunday, September 22nd at 3 pm at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Holloway officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
