Lewis Barnes

January 20, 1921 — September 9, 2007

Lewis Barnes, 86 of Tar Heel, passed away on Sunday, Sept.9,2007, in Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Barnes was born Jan.20, 1921 in Robeson County to the late Myrta and Claude Barnes.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Marie Brisson Barnes; two sons, Jerry Channing Barnes and wife Cathy, and Edward Ray Barnes and wife Betty Jo, all of Tar Heel; and two daughters, Glenda Faye Johnson and husband Richard of Tar Heel, and Carolyn Lewis Johnson and husband Kenneth of Mooresville. Also surviving are a sister, Fay Wester of Lumberton; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two

brothers, four sisters and one grandson.

Mr. Barnes was a longtime merchant in Tar

Heel. He also owned and operated Lewis Barnes

Trucking Co. At the onset of World War II, he was employed in the shipbuilding industry in Wilmington. He later served in the U.S.Army.

Mr. Barnes was a longtime member of the Tar Heel Rescue Squad and served on the board of directors until 2007. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and was a four-time recipient of their Community\\'s Outstanding Citizen Award.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept.10 2007, at Tar Heel Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Mr. Barnes\\' life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept.11, 2007,

at Tar Heel Baptist Church, where he was a devoted and loyal member for more than 60 years.

Southeastern Hospice for their support and care during Mr. Barnes\\'illness. They request that
