Lorena Huggins Snider of Clarkton, North Carolina, died at home on Thursday, May 3, 2007, just two weeks shy of her 97th birthday. She was born in Hoke County, North Carolina, on May 15, 1910. She was the oldest daughter of 11 children born to Edward Wooten and Bessie English Huggins.
She trained as a registered nurse at James Walker Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1932. Even though her graduating class was the last before chemistry was required, she passed the Boards, which included a number of questions on this subject. She did private duty nursing, primarily in Columbus County.
Lorena married the love of her life, Joseph Frank Snider, on October 16, 1943, and they resided in High Point until his death in 1988. She then moved in 1991 to be near her brothers and their families in Clarkton, North Carolina. There she was cared for by her extended family, to whom we owe great gratitude.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Chris Ringwalt of Chapel Hill, and her favorite (and only) grandson Stuart of Burlington. She also is survived by a stepdaughter and her husband, Betty Jo and Dick Kellam of High Point, and their children and families; four sisters-in-law, Mary John Huggins and Margaret Huggins both of Clarkton, Sue Huggins of Bullock, and Eva Snider White of High Point; one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Fred Senter of Raleigh; and a large extended family.
The family will receive friends and family from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Mrs. Snider\\'s home on Saturday,May 5, 2007. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 6,2007, at Elizabethtown Baptist Church with Dr. David Elks officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship for nursing students has been established in her name. Donations should be made payable to the Bladen Community College Foundation, Lorena Huggins Snider Fund, P.O. Box 266, Dublin, N.C. 28332.
