Martha Terry Lyon Hemingway died on Tuesday morning, January 13, 2009 at St. Joseph in the Pines Nursing Center, Southern Pines, at the age of 92.

Mrs. Hemingway was the daughter of Joseph and Alden Lyon and Eliza Biggs Lyon; the granddaughter of Superior Court Judge Chatham Calhoun Lyon, whose portrait hangs in the Bladen County Court House. She is also descended from Colonel James A. Richardson, a general officer in the Revolutionary War, and owner of Harmony Hall.

Throughout her life Mrs. Hemingway was an active volunteer in the community, she served on the Bladen County Hospital Auxiliary Board, was president for two years and received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1989. At Trinity Methodist Church, she served on many committees, sang with the choir, and served on the Board of Trustees.

In 1951, her neighbor, Mr. John K. Clark asked if she would accept a position at the U.S. Post Office in Elizabethtown; she accepted the offer and enjoyed the work for 32 years.

Mrs. Hemingway's survivors include a son, John Alden Hemingway and wife, Pat of Harrells, N.C., a daughter, Diana A. Tufts Meyer and husband, Charles of Pinehurst, N.C.; a son, Terry Lyon Hemingway and wife, Peg, of Wilson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hemingway was predeceased by her husband, John H. Hemingway; a son, Joseph Lennon Hemingway, of Orlando, Fl. and a grandson, Mark Lennon Hemingway, also of Orlando, Fl.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 11:00 am, Trinity Methodist Church, Elizabethtown, N.C. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Interment will follow at the Old Trinity Methodist Cemetery, Elizabethtown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, Main Street, Elizabethtown, N.C.
