Mary Smith-Hodges

Mary Vivian Edge Smith-Hodges, 81, of Live Oak went to her eternal home in glory on February 15, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos Stanley Edge and Mary Elizabeth Smith Edge, and her husband, James A. Smith Jr. Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Amy Elizabeth Smith-Carter and son-in-law Terrance L. Carter of Wilmington; one brother, Hershel S. Edge and wife Mary Beth of Live Oak; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is known for being a sweet lady. That is how everyone described her. She was kind, loving, and forgiving. Her life is a true testament of how we should treat one another.

Vivian loved her Lord, her family, and her church. She worked diligently to keep her house and yard clean and neat. She also liked to be sure the church was in order as well. Over the years, she was VBS director and teacher, church treasurer, choir member, Sunday School teacher and so much more.

In 1971, Vivian began working for the Bladen Co. School System as a reading tutor. She then moved to library assistant, teacher’s assistant, and then secretary for Elizabethtown Primary School. She retired in 2002 but went right back to work part-time at the Bladen Co. Board of Education as a receptionist. She continued to do this until her health would not permit. She also loved to be outside in nature and take care of her many plants.

A Walk-thru Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm at the Faith Baptist Church, NC Hwy 53 West, in White Oak, NC 28399. A graveside service will follow in the church cemetery at 3:00 pm with Rev. David Dew and Rev. Charleston Guyton officiating. All attendees are respectfully asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
