Mary Dunn Suggs, age 88, died peacefully in the early morning of March 12, 2011, in Felton, PA, at the home of her niece, Janice Dean.
Mary was born in White Oak, NC, on May 12, 1922, to the late Thomas J. Dunn and Ethel Cain Dunn, and moved to Charlotte, NC, in 1946 when she married her husband, Hal Suggs. In Charlotte, Mary worked as a payroll clerk for Mecklenburg County.
When Mary and Hal retired, they returned to White Oak, where they both became active in Harmony Hall, a historic site in White Oak. Mary was also very active in the White Oak Women\\'s Club. After Hal died in 2009, Mary moved to Pennsylvania to live with her niece.
Mary was well known for her craft work, having crocheted many afghans and sewn many quilts that were given to friends and family, always signed with her trademark, Merri D.
A viewing will be held on Friday, March 18 from 6-8 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral home In Elizabethtown. Services will be held at Suggs Grove Baptist church in Live Oak on Saturday, March 19 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Barry Swain officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethlehem Cemetery in White Oak where Mary will be buried beside her husband of 63 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harmony Hall, 203 Harmony Hall Road, White Oak, NC 28399.
Mary is survived by her sisters Betty Owen, of Richmond, Va, and Ashe Dew, of White Oak, NC; by her beloved and loyal dog, K.T. Sue; and by her nieces and nephews and many friends who knew, and will always remember her as, Aunt Mary.
