Mary Lou Davis Thompson, 84, of Clarkton went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roland Davis and Lena Mae Pait Davis, her husband, Sonny Thompson Jr., three sisters: Shelby Donavan, Doris Carter and Josephine Scott Pitt and one brother, Jimmy Davis. Mary Lou leaves behind two sons, Gregory Thompson (Karen) of Winnabow; Billy Thompson (Kim) of Clarkton; two daughters, Melinda Bender (Jack) of Pollocksville; Donna Shaw (Vic) of Clarkton; one brother, Johnny Davis of Bladenboro; three sisters: Janis Davis of Evergreen, Wanda Dowless of the home and Debra Jackson of Bladenboro; 10 grandchildren: Brandon Shaw (Kara) of Wilmington; Jake Bender (Meghan) of Pollocksville; Kayla Allen (Josh) of Clarkton; Krista McDaniel (John) of Fuquay Varina; Candice Campbell (Tyler) of Mebane; Katie Bell (Josh) of New Bern; Jason Thompson of Winnabow; Noelle Thompson of Clarkton; Brooke Meares (Anthony) of Clarkton; Courtney Williams (Thomas) of Clarkton. She also leaves behind 17 great grandchildren: Tarynn and Alani Shaw, Charlie, Hugh, and Camden Bender, Kali and Will Allen, Jackson and Harrison McDaniel, Cruz and Colt Campbell, Wyatt and Cason Bell and Trenton, Trinity, Alex, and Tinley Meares.
Mary Lou was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was the Valedictorian of the Bladenboro Class of 1953. She was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church for 66 years where she served several years as a Sunday School teacher, WMU Director and choir director. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, and reading. She also enjoyed taking care of her grandbabies and helping others. Mary Lou spent many days giving rides to town or doctor appointments to those in need. Her generosity and thoughtfulness have left an eternal legacy in the hearts of all those who knew and love her.
A special graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Cashwell Cemetery in Abbottsburg. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing. “Grandmother Mary Lou’s Helpers” will assist with the service.
