Maxie Pope Duncan

Maxie Pope Duncan, 87, of Bladenboro passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. She was born on July 19, 1936, in Columbus County, NC the daughter of the late James O. Pope Sr. and Nina Davis Pope. She graduated from Whiteville Highschool in 1953.

 She worked for Motor Casting Repair and Orkin in Charlotte until her retirement. After retirement, she moved next door to her sister “Jackie” in Bladenboro. Maxie always had a love of people and helping others. She soon took a job with the Dollar Tree in Elizabethtown where she could be around people. She worked with them for 15 years.

Maxie was a devoted sister, wife, mother, and grandmother who left a long legacy of compassion and dedication that will not be forgotten.

 She was preceded in death by her husband Vertis Oneal Duncan, her parents, and one brother James O. Pope Jr. Left to honor her memory are son Mitchell O. Duncan and wife Mary of Bladenboro, one sister Jacqueline Pope Ludlum and husband Bobby of Bladenboro, two grandchildren, Joshua Duncan and Kaelan Schultz, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 5:00 pm in the Bladen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Elizabethtown with the Reverend Jimmy Pope officiating. At other times, the family will receive friends at Maxie’s home at 43 JA Carroll Road in Bladenboro.

 The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Cape Fear Hospice for their dedication and care administered to Maxie during her illness.
