Miriam Hite Mitchell Clark, 85, was called home to heaven on Sunday, June 18, 2017. She was the loving wife of David Kemp Clark of Elizabethtown, NC, for sixty-six years and the mother of David Kemp Clark, Jr. (wife Vicki), Mary Kay Clark (husband David Lee), Cindy Clark Carroll (husband Clifton) and Hope Clark Campbell (husband Brian). She dearly loved her granddaughters Christian, Claire, Cybil and Cydney Campbell and grandson Davie Carroll. She was a devoted older sister to Martha Potter, Marie Medlin, Ginny Myers, and brother Terry Mitchell. Miriam was greeted in heaven by her parents Charles and Evelyn Mitchell and brothers Charles Mitchell Jr. and Bob Mitchell.
Born and raised in Kelly, NC, she returned to "The Old Place" often to do what she enjoyed most, surround herself with her family and celebrate the beauties of nature. She loved the Cape Fear River and family camping trips in the Smoky Mountains (although she could do without snakes!). An active environmentalist, she worked hard to keep the world beautiful and safe.
Miriam wrote poetry and was a gifted storyteller. She was called upon frequently to recount childhood anecdotes of growing up in the country, including close encounters with a neighbor's bull, and being rescued by boat from the second floor porch during a flood.
Her love of music ranged from old time hymns to Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley. She sang in the church choir of the Elizabethtown Baptist Church, where she also taught Sunday school, for over sixty-years. Those who heard her will tell you that Heaven's choir just improved. Those who knew her will tell you that her faith never wavered.
She attended Campbell College from which she was given the 2009 Alumni Service Award and worked at Bladen County Hospital before becoming a full time homemaker and mother. Miriam served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a chaperone on many band trips. She was a "Dance Mom" before the term existed. She will be remembered for her cooking skills, beautiful gardens, and spotless homes.
Miriam would fish until she could no longer see the water and had to be told it was time to go home, but might not leave even then if they were biting.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 10 am at Elizabethtown Baptist Church Fellowship Hall followed by an 11 am funeral service in the sanctuary officiated by Rev. Nathan Morton and Dr. Jerry Wallace. Burial will follow the services in the Elizabethtown Cemetery. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of David and Miriam Clark, 6590 US Hwy 701 N., White Lake, NC 28337.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to Elizabethtown Christian Academy, 1800 West Broad Street, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.
