Norman M. Black, Jr., 82, of North Myrtle Beach, passed into the presence of the Lord from his home early Friday morning.
Mr. Black was born November 12, 1926 in Concord, North Carolina, to Norman and Mary Bost Black. He grew up and finished high school in Charlotte and served with the United States Army in the Pacific at the end of World War II. He later graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and soon entered the construction business. He retired as president of Rea Construction Company in Charlotte and relocated to Atlanta, where he worked for several years in a family-owned business founded by his oldest son. He was a resident of North Myrtle Beach since 2003.
He was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church and especially enjoyed participation in the weekly men's prayer breakfast at his church.
Mr. Black is survived by his wife, Jane Butler Black; sons, Norman Black III and his wife, Susan, Joe Black and his wife, Lynn, Bill Black and his wife, Judy, all of Atlanta; daughter-in-law, Frances Black of Atlanta; step-son, David Armstrong and his wife Teresa of Greenville SC; sister, Mary Frances Delaney of Charlotte; brother, John Black and his wife, Lynn, of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Norma Black of Wilmington; brother-in-law, Joe Butler of Cary and his wife Charley; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and a step-great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Butler Black, to whom he was married for 49 years; son, Robert Black and brother, James Black.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery in Bladenboro, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until the hour of the service.
