Robert Dowless

Robert DeVane Dowless, also known as “Papa”, 65 years old, passed away at his home surrounded by his family, Monday, April 5th. He was born November 20, 1955 in Abbottsburg, North Carolina. Preceded death by his mother, Maxine Dowless, and brother Delane Dowless. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Sherry Dowless and sons, Jeremy (Emily) and Nathan (Ashley) and 5 beautiful granddaughters Taylor, Tenley, Riley, Avery, & Anna Grey. Also, his father Dewey Dowless and his siblings, Vickie, Ricky, and James.

Born and raised in Abbottsburg, NC, the son of Maxine and Dewey Dowless, he was a lifelong resident of Abbottsburg, NC.

Robert was a loving, devoted Christian husband, father, and grandfather. He graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1974.  He married the love of his life, Sherry in 1975.  Together, they raised their two sons- their pride and joy.

In his early years, Robert worked at the Red & White Store in Bladenboro for Mr. Carl Suggs, whom he adored his entire life. He then worked on the family farm and was known for his work ethic. He cropped tobacco and he could operate any machinery.

He later began his career with DuPont in Leland, in 1974, where he retired from as a shift supervisor for the resins division in 2013.

When he was not working, Robert loved spending time with his wife, children and especially his granddaughters who were the apple of his eye. You could often catch him mowing his yard, fishing in his pond, or at Ocean Isle Beach, or piddling in his building.  He could fix anything. He was often referred to as the “Unofficial Mayor of Abbottsburg” because he loved to ride around to keep an eye out for his neighbors.

Robert would do anything for anyone. He was a kind and humble soul. Robert’s smile and sweet demeanor will surely be missed.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service is planned for Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 2:00 pm at New Light Church with Rev. Dale Hester officiating. Burial will follow the services at Pine Crest Cemetery in Bladenboro.
