Robert Summerlin

Dr. Robert Lee Summerlin, Jr. of Dublin passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015. Dr. Summerlin was a Navy Veteran.
Dr. Summerlin was born to Robert and Cornelia Summerlin on September 15, 1928 at Summerlin's Crossroads near Mt. Olive, Bob was the 14th of 15 children, the only son who survived infancy. Bob grew up working on the farm and drove a school bus when he was 15 years old. Bob met his future bride, Estelle Waller, when he was 16 and they were married in 1953. Bob graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill in 1951 and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa; he graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in the top 10% of his class. After his Navy service in Portsmouth, Virginia, Bob and Estelle moved their young family to Dublin in 1958 to open his medical practice. After retiring in 1997, Bob enjoyed playing golf and bridge, swimming, and watching Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Bob loved his family, the UNC Tarheels, and his church where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Bob is survived by Estelle, his wife of 62 years, his four children Robin (Renee), Nell, Julia (Jay), and Mark, grandchildren Rob and Larkin Summerlin and Jackson and Jarrett Wright, his sister Nancy Goodson, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 25, 2015 from 1:00 until 1:45 pm at Dublin First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 7275 Albert Street, (Hwy. 87) Dublin, NC 28332. The funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm at the church with Rev. Cameron McGill and Rev. Julia Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
