Ruth Scruggs Porter, 93, of Elizabethtown, NC passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014. She spent her last few years in Hartsville, SC in long-term care due to declining health.
Mrs. Porter is best known for her 40 years of teaching primarily the fourth grade in Bladen County Schools. Teaching was one of her greatest joys, and she touched the lives of over a thousand Bladen County children.
Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh McLean Porter, Sr., her parents, Claude and Aquilla Scruggs, her three brothers, Joe, Jack, and Harry Scruggs, and sister, Grace Pick.
She is survived by her three sons, Dick Porter and wife Brenda of Hartsville, SC, Mac Porter and wife Pam of Lumberton, Kent Porter of Lisbon, and her daughter, Marianne Porter Absher and husband Tommy of Raleigh. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Wendy Porter Folsom and husband Cleve of Hartsville, SC, Richard Porter and wife Susan of Greensboro, Megan Porter Grant and husband Kevin of Hartsville, SC, Elise Porter of Wilmington, Chad Porter and wife Desiree of Wilmington, Rob Absher and wife Heather of Wake Forest, Hugh Absher of Raleigh, and Alex Porter of Lisbon. She also cherished her eight great-grandchildren, Land and Mac Folsom, Caroline, Karenna and Ry Porter, Claire Gore, and Tatum and Bodey Porter.
Visitation will be at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown on Sunday evening, April 27, 2014 between 6 and 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Porter Cemetery in Kelly, NC at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014.
