She was preceded in death by her parents: John Addison Blackburn and Mattie Hammonds Blackburn, nine sisters: Ophelia, Blanche, Gladys, Evelyn, Willie Mae, Margaret, Earple, Claytie, and Eldene, and two brothers: Glenwood and Roger. Velma leaves behind her loving husband of 69 years, Sanford Edwards of the home; three sons: Arnold Edwards, JD Edwards and wife Darlina, and Deryl Edwards and wife Darlene, all of Bladenboro; ten grandchildren: Scott Edwards, Erik Edwards and wife Janna, Matthew Edwards and Allison, Sandy Durden and husband Willie, Mollie Lewis and husband Billy, Marianne Valentiner and husband Stewart, Kyle Hensley and fiance' Shana, Dara Edwards, Nathan Pait, Stephanie Bryant and husband Spencer, and 13 great grandchildren: Karly, Evan, Will, Walker, Eva, Elizabeth, Etta, Vera, Mae, John, Peyton, Sadie, and Samuel.
Velma was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She treasured the time spent with her husband and family. Above all, she loved God and witnessed to others on a daily basis. Velma was a beautiful lady who never went anywhere without lipstick and earbobs. She was always "young at heart" for she enjoyed playing hide and seek as well as riding four wheelers with her grandchildren. Velma also enjoyed cooking biscuits, baking cakes which were her specialty, playing the piano and the organ. Her family fondly remembers her grits, chicken & pastry, and the hot cocoa always on the stovetop in the winters. Precious memories that will last a lifetime of the woman who was the cornerstone of their family.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 3rd at Galeed Baptist Church in Bladenboro followed by the funeral at 3 pm with Dr. Mack Roberts and Rev. Warren Hill officiating. A private burial will follow the services.
