Walter Adcox

September 27, 1934 — January 7, 2009

Walter Adcox, 74, of Elizabethtown, died on January 7, 2009 after a long battle with chronic lung disease. He was born September 27, 1934 in Bladenboro to the late Hugh Chesterfield and Hattie Adcox.

Mr. Adcox is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Thaggard Adcox; two daughters, Sandy Adcox Saburn and her husband, Bruce Saburn, of Charlotte; and Cindy Adcox Clark and husband, Hugh Alexander Clark, Jr. of Dublin; three grandchildren, Jason Saburn of Chesapeake, VA; Katherine and Alexander Clark of Dublin; and one great-grandchild, Gavin Saburn of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Stella Hagemeyer, and her husband, Maynard Hagemeyer of Clarksville, OH; and Dorothy Sebastian, and her husband, Ed Sebastian, of Huntsville, AL. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mella Thornhill and Esther Mandel, and two brothers, J.C. and Willard Adcox.

Mr. Adcox was a loving husband, father and grandfather and valued his family more than anything in the world. Mr. Adcox married the love of his life in 1959. Together they raised two daughters and greatly enjoyed their three grandchildren.

While he grew up in Bladenboro, he lived with his eldest sister, Stella, and her husband in southern Ohio for several summers and worked on their farm. He enjoyed learning about managing a farm and working with racehorses.

Mr. Adcox served his country in the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Charlotte where he worked in the grocery business for Pilot Brokerage Company. Walter enjoyed his time in the grocery industry, but his love of plants and desire to be closer to family in Bladen County led him to start Adcox Nursery in Elizabethtown in 1972.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 9, 2009 from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home. A celebration of Mr. Adcox's life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2:00pm at Elizabethtown Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown City Cemetery.

The family has requested memorials in Mr. Adcox's memory be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 206 Warrior Trail, Whiteville, NC 28472.
