Walter Burney

December 12, 1945 — September 11, 2009

Walter Samuel "Peat-C" Burney, 63, of Clarkton entered into eternal rest Friday, September 11, 2009.

He was born December 12, 1945 in Bladen County to the late George and Georgia Anner Burney.

Walt was a man of many interests. He was an avid listener of beach music, a golfer, an amateur gardener and botanist, as well as a goat farmer. He was well-known for his excellent cooking skills. He created and perfected many recipes. During the 1970s and early 1980s, Walt was very active in the Clarkton Jaycees. He was president of the Clarkton chapter and also served as District Director. He, along with his wife, Jean, founded the Border Belt Chapter of Compassionate Friends support group. Walt was very much a family man. He was also free spirited, tender hearted, and was always quick with a smile, a laugh, and a wink.

He had many professional interests as well. He was the owner and operator of Lee's Grill in Clarkton in the 1970s. Walt was a route salesman for JR Britt Peanut Co. and Tom's Foods. He also served as an environmental specialist for Murphy-Brown, LLC.

Walt was predeceased by his parents, George and Georgia Anner Burney; daughter, Joan Meade Pait; and brother, Buddy Burney.

He is survived by wife, Jean Cross, of the home; son, Brian Meade, of Massachusetts; daughter, Kelly Meade Evans, and husband Brad of Clarkton; three brothers, Jim and wife, Linda of Elizabethtown, Ronnel and wife, Ann of Clarkton, and Marvin and wife, Marsha of Clarkton; one sister, Geraldine Edge and husband, David of White Oak; six grandchildren, Chris, Nick, Victoria and Alexandra Evans and Sean and Jeanna Meade; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is planned for Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Anne Natoli officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Plains Presbyterian Church, 6049 White Plains Church Rd, Council, NC 28434 or Grace Episcopal Church, Whiteville.
