Willie Hester Edwards Burney
Mrs. Willie Burney went home to be with the Lord on August 5, 2006 at 5:00 a.m.. She was at her residence in White Oak, N.C.
She was born September 20, 1923 to the late Willie Sophia Hester and Thomas David Edwards of Bladenboro. Willie was the youngest of eight children. Five siblings predeceased Willie: Bonnie Mae, Dewane, DeWitt Taft, Lawrence J., and Mary Lina Hester.
Willie was married to John "June" Wesley Burney, Jr., on December 7, 1945. They have two daughters, Wanda June Herring and Willie Jean Teel. They resided in White Oak.
Willie was very active in her stay-at-home mom duties. She was involved in the Homemaker's Club, The Ladies Bible Society and produced many of the Church of God Christmas programs. She was a caretaker to all including her mother, sisters, brothers, aunts and cousins. No one ever left her home hungry and if they needed financial assistance; that was provided as well. She was a superb cook, great hostess and always ready for a get-together. In her younger days it was nothing to have fifteen people for lunch or dinner on Sunday. She was an avid antiques collector as well as very good at refinishing. She taught many folks the skills.
She is survived by her two daughters and her son-in-law Bryant Herring, her grandchildren; Molly Burney Herring and David Knox McLean, III of Asheboro, Jonathan Bryan and Amy Herring and their daughter, Elizabeth Faith Herring of Durham, June Marie Teel and Jeremy Dickinson of Beaufort and Carla Teel of White Oak.
She has a sister LaRue Lancaster of Fayetteville and a brother M.D. Edwards of Bladenboro.
She will be missed by many friends and family members.
Her funeral services were conducted August 8 at 3:00 p.m. at the Church of God of White Oak and burial was in the church cemetery.
Those officiating were Pastor Mackie Walters, Pastor Leon Warren, Pastor Alton Burrows and Pastor Randy Locklear. A eulogy was presented by her nephew Wes Hudson of Wilmington. Music was provided by Pastor Alton Burrows and by Sherry Burney, her niece.
The family would like to say "Thank You" to all that were so caring and helpful near the end. And we would like to express our gratitude to Advantage Hospice for being there for us 24 hours a day. Our gratitude to them is beyond words.
